Funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), we are developing a quick yet low-cost and custom-fit hearing aid solution through smartphone app based direct 3D ear imaging, localized hearing aid earshell rapid production (3D printing), and modular electronic integration. We have been teaming with many in-field experts to prototype our patented technologies and target over the counter or OTC hearing aids market.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 15% of American adults, or 37.5 million people, report some degree of hearing loss. It is estimated that over 300 million people are hearing impaired worldwide. Based on the population, hearing impairment is arguably the number one disability in today’s world.

While nowadays people can benefit from the use of a hearing aid, the fact is grim: less than 20% of the hearing impaired in developed nations and less than 1% of those in developing nations have hearing aids.  Primary concerns come from affordability and quality of the hearing aid device.  In fact, The cost of a pair of custom-fit hearing aids can be up to $6K and the conventional technology that produces hearing aid products is uncomfortable, time consuming, and prone to error. This results in up to 30% of custom hearing aids sold in the U.S. returned.  Any breakthrough that can dramatically lower costs and improve comfort has the potential to have a huge impact on worldwide use: driving volume higher, cost lower, and providing dramatic social and medical benefits.
